While the Southern section was being occupied by the United States, the Northern section was being occupied by the Soviets.  The North had an authoritarian socialist government, meaning it was a dictatorship.  They have an industrialized, highly centralized economy.  But, unfortunately they face significant economic disruptions, series of natural disasters, economic mismanagement, and serious resource shortages.  When North Korea declared war, they invaded south Korea and it's rural areas.  Thousands of people died from starvation and disease during the agonizing death marches during the war. The militarization of the Korean Demilitarized Zone has worked to isolate North Korea, partially through US demand for a stronger border.  (CIA World Fact Book)

The DMZ spreads roughly 155 miles long and 2.5 miles wide.  The sharp separation of the DMZ has divided families, communities, and two separate cultures have developed, the north and the south which despises and hates on another.  Tae Sung Dong and Kijong-dong were the only villages to remain within the boundaries of the DMZ.  The United States sanctions prevented the creation of a modern economy state which have hardened the North.  The United States sanctions prevented the importation of any technology and locked the North in the 1950's.  The North only has 3 internet hosts, and 1.18 million lines of telephones with the population of 24,457,492.  The Sanction also prevented much foreign aid from entering North Korea during  series of devastating famines.  Millions of North Koreans have starved to death because of the poor wheat crops and in the 90's the United States forbid the importing of wheat to the North.    (CIA World Fact Book)

"The food was hard rock candy, and they were in tin cans. Some of (the shelters) had complete hospital units in them, the MASH units they used in the Korean War. The better ones were elaborately set up, but most were basic."- Edward Reynolds
